Carnivorous creatures in wigs, red-eyed demons with press-on nails, and razor-sharp fangs with plump lips—this body of work is a blasphemous display of queer celebration created to disturb Christian Nationalists. Encompassing acrylic paintings with saturated color palettes and bold screen prints, my work draws inspiration from the visceral Chicago drag scene and confronts conservative propaganda directed at the LGBTQIA+ community.
States like Montana, Texas, Tennessee, and Florida have attempted to pass legislation banning public drag performances. Much like the American Satanic Panic of the early 1980s, Christian propaganda has labeled anything that doesn’t conform to traditional family values as Satanic. When far-right groups see us living authentically without the codependency of religion, they make ridiculous attempts to shut us down, such as claiming that we’re performing genital mutilation on children. Meanwhile, the biggest threats to children today are guns and pastors.
“Kids are safer at a drag story time than at church.” — Drag Activist Brigitte Bandit
In a defiant gesture toward the current political climate, I am leaning into what they fear most. I am past attempting to convince others we’re human too. If you cannot treat people from other walks of life with respect, then you're too far gone. This collection arises from my frustration with the current U.S. government, its favoritism towards Christian nationalists, and its consistent demonization of the queer community. If Republicans want to paint drag queens as malevolent monsters who only want to manipulate children, I’ll paint it for them.
